Most of what took place in Christianity during the first century is familiar to us through the New Testament Scriptures. In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn how the missionary work expanded the Church of Jesus Christ from its original community in Jerusalem, composed of Jews who had converted to Christ, to the Gentiles throughout many parts of the Roman Empire and eventually to Rome itself. The relative peace of that century, together with the Roman system of roads and waterways, enabled Christianity to spread rapidly. A common culture and a common language also contributed to its expansion. However, the primary driving force behind the growth of Christianity was the Holy Spirit, who raised up great apostles such as Saint Paul and martyrs such as Stephen, the first Christian martyr. When the Gospel was being proclaimed to the ends of the earth by Catholic missionaries during the first half of the seventeenth century, Europe was engulfed in bitter religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, as well as among Protestant nations themselves. The final major conflict took place in Germany. The Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) came to an end with the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which granted legal equality to Catholics, Lutherans, and Calvinists in Germany. In practice, however, each nation or region maintained its own Christian church, and followers of other denominations living within that territory were often subjected to direct or indirect persecution.
Nevertheless, within every divided branch of the Church, there remained many places where the Gospel of Jesus Christ continued to shine brightly. The Catholic Church remained determined to strengthen Catholic life in Europe while also spreading the Catholic faith throughout the world. Up to the present day, the Catholic Church has overcome tremendous challenges and endured with renewed vitality and strength.
